It was genuinely difficult to find a half-decent photo of a stock Wrangler Unlimited.
The Wrangler Unlimited is the successor to the XJ Cherokee.

You’re not the first to make that observation. I think it’s considerably larger, plus not a unibody, so ¯\_()_/¯

I think youre righr. I saw this exact pair parked end to end in a parking lot once. Almost snapped a picture. The Wrangler is bigger.

I’d say it’s more of a Wagoneer successor.

It is, but everything is larger now, so I think relatively it’s kind of the same. It is also not unibody, but I think most of the people buying them don’t know or care, same with who bought the XJs.

Yes. But only by default rather than by design.

Interesting. Where I am at least, they’re all done up to make it look like they’re capable and taken off road, which seems like a different crowd than who bought Wagoneers. I wasn’t around when Wagoneers were new, however, so I dunno.

Yes, I should’ve said somewhat unintentional successor. It’s just the closest you can get to what the XJ was in a new vehicle.

I think the Grand Cherokee is more of a (Grand) Wagoneer successor, especially considering the spot it occupies in the Jeep lineup (luxury).

Yep. S’funny though...I never liked the XJ.
Being in Oz, and the XJ being a key part of the Jeep renaissance down here at the time, they never clicked with me. Perhaps because the interior had more in common with a Tata ute than the Toyota Prado or the Subaru Outback of the time - the gearstick looked like someone shoved a big Stanley screwdriver in the top of the box and said that’ll do. The switch to RHD wasn’t great either. But still plenty of people bought them...though few seem to have survived.

The xj has 2 successors
1. Off road 4 door - unlimited Wrangler
2. Size and market position ( when new) - renegade
